Opening Tracks – 1/27/15

Rocknowski is unavailable, so Nat will be taking over all the Opening Tracks. I’ve already heard these entire albums, so this might be a short exercise.

I’m not sure I’d call anything this week a “winner”,

Bettye LavetteWorthy – “Unbelievable”
– This is a “gritty, funky cover of Bob Dylan”, but for my money it’s not gritty or funky enough.

3 Stars: Will probably finish listening.

Björk – Vulnicura – “Stonemilker”
– This track reminds me of some of my favorite work on Medúlla, which is actually most of the problem. This feels a little bit of a retread that isn’t as good.

3 Stars: Will probably finish listening.

Dengue FeverThe Deepest Lake – “Tokay”
– This band has some amazing tunes, with Cannibal Courtship being a fine example. This didn’t do much for me.

3 Stars: Will probably finish listening.

Gov’t MuleSco-Mule – “Hottentot”
– I did actually enjoy this 11 minute jam of John Scofield’s “Hottentot”, especially the guitar interplay. I also see that there are some J.B.’s tracks coming up.

3 Stars: Will probably finish listening.

The Lone BellowThen Came the Morning – “Then Came The Morning”
– I instantly loved the way that this song starts in media res. I also really enjoy the large band aspect, and his passionate vocal performance.

4 Stars: Will definitely finish listening.

MC YogiOnly Love is Real – “Clear The Path”
– MC Yogi has definitely taken some of the Indian influences out of his music, and his rapping sounds pretty similar to album guest star Matisyahu.

3 Stars: Will probably finish listening.

Punch BrothersThe Phosphorescent Blues
– This epic, 10-minute bluegrass jam did nothing but breed contempt from me.

2 Stars: Probably will not finish listening.

Robert RichFilaments
– Just some standard ambient, textural sound from one of the biggest names in the field. There’s a time and a place for this, and when I’m in that time and place, I will definitely listen to the rest of this.

4 Stars: Will definitely finish listening.
