New Video Releases – 1/5/16


Biopics and Sundance films dominate a huge new release week with over a dozen new films.

Highlights this week include the digital release of music biopic (and surprise hit) Straight Outta Compton, indie hit Sicario, Sundance players The Experimenter, Infinitely Polar Bear and Sleeping With Other People, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit and Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk.

 – Dramatic comedy starring Mickey Rourke, Nat Wolff, Emma Roberts and Sarah Silverman. Tribeca 2015.

Diary Of A Teenage Girl
– Coming of age drama about a 15-year-old girl who starts a sexual relationship with her mother’s boyfriend. Sundance 2015. First Feature: director Marielle Heller. Sundance 2015.

– Dramatic biopic about social psychologist Stanley Milgrim and his historic experiments on obedience. Stars Peter Sarsgaard, Winona Ryder. Sundance 2015.

Infinitely Polar Bear
– After Mark Ruffalo has a nervous breakdown, he tries to win his wife back. First Feature: director Maya Forbes. Sundance 2015. Golden Globe Nominee for Best Actor. 

– One of cinema’s greatest provacateurs, Gaspar Noe, returns with a 3D film featuring unsimulated sex. Cannes 2015 

Memories Of The Sword
– South Korean wuxia romance period piece.

Our Brand Is Crisis
– Narrative remake of the 2005 documentary about the 2002 Bolivian presidential election, where both candidates hired Americna political consultants to assist their campaigns. Starring Sandra Bullock, Billy Bob Thornton and Anthony Mackie. Toronto 2015. 

– Action crime thriller about FBI agents taking down a Mexican drug cartel. Starring Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin. Sicario was an indie box office hit and well liked by critics. It has already won several critics awards. Cannes and Toronto 2015.

– Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie play a womanizer and a serial cheater in this R-rated romantic comedy. They begin a platonic relationship together and try to reform their ways. Sundance and Tribeca 2015.

Straight Outta Compton
– Music biopic about N.W.A., one of the most influential rap albums of all time. Straight Outta Compton was a huge hit commercially, as well as with critics.

– M. Night Shyamalan goes the found footage horror route, with mixed critical results, but a large box office hit.

– Dramatic biopic about Philippe Petit, the high-wire artist who walked between the Twin Towers in 1974. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
