(1-2-3-4-5-6-7) Count The Days –
Patti Labelle & The Bluebells

I hate most of the charting music on the Billboard charts of the 1980’s.

I think it’s mostly because of the production choices made in that era. The desire to make everything clean, glossy, and poppy in a way that is most displeasing to me. As a result, I solidified a lot of opinions about certain artists growing up, based on their material that was on the radio at the time. The best part of this project is having those opinions shattered.

Just like it would have been wrong to judge Aretha Franklin merits on the quality of “Who’s Zoomin’ Who“, (from her most successful, similarly titled album), it was also wrong to judge Patti Labelle on the contents of her Platinum-selling, chart-topping album “Winner In You”.

Hearing this song for the first time six months ago was such a joy, and it instantly became a favorite. I just don’t understand how someone can sing a song like this and then wind up doing a duet with Michael McDonald.

(1-2-3-4-5-6-7) was originally released in 1967 by Inez & Charlie Foxx, and their version is great too. This version was recorded in 1969 at Atlantic Studios by Swamp Dogg. It appears to have been unreleased until 2006’s Various Artist compilation “Atlantic Unearthed: Soul Sisters”.
